Cryolite Series

Also known as: Sodium hexafluoroaluminate; Sodium aluminum fluoride Molecular formula: Na₃AlF₆ Appearance: Powder-like, granular, or pellet-shaped (white to off-white in color) Product applications include: Electrolytic aluminum production, abrasives and grinding tools, sandpaper, abrasive belts, ceramics, enamels, glass, and casting industries. Primarily used as a fluxing agent in aluminum electrolysis, it also serves as a wear-resistant additive in abrasive products, significantly enhancing the durability, cutting performance, and sharpness of grinding wheels—thereby extending both their service life and shelf stability. Additionally, cryolite exhibits excellent chemical stability: under normal conditions, it neither decomposes, evaporates, nor deliquesces. Its melting point is higher than that of aluminum itself. Beyond these applications, cryolite is also utilized in the production of milky white glass. Furthermore, it finds use as an electrolyte in the manufacturing of aluminum alloys, ferroalloys, and boiling steel, as well as a key ingredient in the formulation of grinding wheels, sandpaper, and abrasive belts.

Aluminum Alloy Refining Agent Series

Aluminum alloy refining agents are commonly used auxiliary materials during the aluminum alloy melting process. Their primary purpose is to remove hydrogen and floating oxide inclusions from the molten aluminum, resulting in purer aluminum liquid. The main components of these refining agents include NaCl, KCl, Na2SiF6, K2SiF6, Na3AlF6, Na2CO3, and C2Cl6, among others. Notably, a specific ratio of NaCl and KCl can be formulated into a low-melting-point refining agent—Na2SiF6—which effectively aids in slag-liquid separation. Meanwhile, Na3AlF6 exhibits a strong ability to adsorb oxides, while Na2CO3 promotes boiling action. Lastly, C2Cl6 is an exceptionally effective compound for removing both slag and gas impurities. It’s worth noting that the exact composition ratios may vary depending on the specific requirements of the refining agent, tailored to suit different grades of aluminum alloys.

The product is a remelting granular refining agent, prepared by first mixing and stirring inorganic compounds such as chloride and fluoride salts, followed by high-temperature melting to remove crystalline water and harmful impurities. It is then crushed, screened (to achieve particle sizes between 0.85mm and 3mm), and finally packaged.

How is cryolite used in casting?

Sprinkle it onto the surface of the molten iron at a dosage of 0.1%–0.3%. Its functions include slag removal and surface coverage. Cryolite helps dilute the molten slag, making it easier to collect and remove. When heated above 1011°C, cryolite decomposes, releasing AlF3 gas. This gas can protect the surface of the molten iron from oxidation—but unfortunately, it is harmful to humans.
